DaklaPack is business buddy of UNICEF
We are happy to announce that DaklaPack Europe and DaklaPack US are now officially business buddies of UNICEF, supporting their Plastic Bricks Program.
With this program, UNICEF addresses the tremendous plastic waste leakage in the environment of the Ivory Coast and the lack of educational opportunities for children, due to an insufficient infrastructure. Additionally, poor waste management in the Ivory Coast also negatively impacts children’s health, increasing the likelihood of pneumonia and diarrhea.
With the Plastic Brick project, UNICEF aims to create a women-led recycling market, meaning that mostly underprivileged women collect plastic waste from the environment. This plastic is then purchased by UNICEF’s recycling plant at a fair and stable price. The purchased plastic waste is recycled (upcycled) into safe and sustainable building bricks which are then used to build classrooms in areas with a significant shortage of schools.
This increases the job availabilities, stable income, number of classrooms and thus an increase in education and a step closure towards a cleaner environment. Additionally with this project the value of plastic in the mind of people is addressed and changed – from waste to a source of income and a valuable resource.
With our contribution, UNICEF is able to build one entire classroom of 68sqm. Approximately five tons of plastic
waste will get recycled for this classroom, offering access to education for 50 children.
